Building Customized Solutions

We extend the service life of your existing systems.

Our solutions are:

  • technically robust
  • economically sound
  • designed for long-term operation

Downtime rarely announces itself. The consequences often become visible only once costs are already high.

Those who invest too late usually pay significantly more later.

Modernization is often addressed only after effort, cost and risk have already increased.

TM BCS helps modernize existing systems at the right time and keep them operating reliably.

Typical topics

  • system architecture and control concept
  • interface and safety concept
  • project schedule with milestones

Our role

  • prepare a clearly defined scope of work
  • issue a binding proposal with cost and schedule framework

05

Implementation & Commissioning

Build, integrate and commission the system.

Typical topics

  • control cabinet manufacturing and installation
  • software integration and testing
  • on-site commissioning and optimization

Our role

About Us

About

Over 17 years of experience in technical projects

TM BCS has been active in technical projects since 2009 and operates within an international partner network.

The focus is on automation projects for existing systems — from retrofit and modernization through to the development of new systems.

Together with specialized partners, we combine engineering, software development, control cabinet manufacturing and commissioning into one integrated technical solution.

Dipl.-Ing. Tomislav Maricic, Founder of TM-BCS

"No immediate time pressure often just means the risk is being underestimated. With outdated technology, a single fault can bring the entire operation to a stop."

Modernized test facility at the High Temperature Competence Center

Modernization of a technical centre

Messer Austria GmbH, Gumpoldskirchen(opens in a new tab)

Project period: August – December 2025

As part of the modernization of the High Temperature Competence Center at the Gumpoldskirchen site, the electrical control and switchgear systems of an existing test facility were comprehensively upgraded. The aim of the project was to renew the automation infrastructure in line with current safety requirements and to integrate new systems into the existing plant infrastructure.

TM BCS was responsible for the electrical engineering design, construction and delivery of six new control cabinets as well as the modification of two existing control cabinets. In addition, the complete electrical documentation was prepared, and on-site assembly, electrical installation, system testing and commissioning of the facility were carried out.

The new infrastructure is based on a Siemens PLC control architecture with distributed I/O stations, industrial HMI and visualization systems, and integrated safety functions. The engineering design and documentation of the facility were completed entirely in EPLAN.

The project placed particular demands on the integration of new automation technology into existing plant systems and on the flexible implementation of modifications within an active development and testing environment.

FAQs

How much does an industrial retrofit cost?

The cost of an industrial retrofit depends on the scope of the measures involved.

Replacing PLC systems, drives or HMI panels is usually significantly more cost-effective than building a new system.

Key factors include the condition of the existing system, the available documentation and the required degree of modernization.

In many cases, a retrofit is the most economical option.

How long does it take to modernize an existing system?

A modernization project can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Smaller measures, such as replacing a control system, can often be completed during short planned downtime windows.

More extensive modernization projects are usually planned in stages to keep production interruptions as low as possible.

How much downtime is required for a modernization?

Downtime is minimized as far as possible.

With good planning, pre-assembly — for example in control cabinet manufacturing — and structured commissioning, many tasks can be completed outside ongoing production.

Critical interventions are scheduled during planned downtime.

When is a retrofit a better option than a new system?

A retrofit makes sense when the mechanical base of the system is still in good condition.

Typical reasons include outdated control technology, unavailable spare parts or unstable processes.

A new system becomes the better option only when the existing system has reached its technical or economic limits.

What is the difference between retrofit and modernization?

Retrofit means the targeted replacement of outdated components such as PLC systems, drives or HMI panels.

Modernization goes further:

  • processes are optimized
  • energy consumption is reduced
  • performance and stability are improved

Both approaches help keep existing systems in operation over the long term.

What happens if no documentation is available?

Missing documentation is common in existing industrial systems.

Electrical schematics, software and system structures can be reconstructed through system analysis and reverse engineering.

This creates a reliable basis for retrofit or modernization.

Can existing software be reused?

Existing software can often be reused in part.

The decision depends on the condition, structure and future requirements of the software.

In many cases, revising or rebuilding the software is the better option for ensuring long-term stability and scalability.

What does a retrofit or modernization project look like in practice?

A retrofit or modernization project starts with an analysis of the existing system and an assessment of possible measures.

Based on that, the technical concept, project scope and implementation are defined.

Implementation is then carried out in a structured way and aligned with your production requirements.

Early planning helps reduce risk and manage downtime in a controlled way.

Can my existing system still be modernized in a meaningful way?

Whether modernization makes sense depends on the technical condition of the system, the availability of components and the operational requirements.

In many cases, targeted measures can deliver a significant improvement without requiring a completely new system.

A technical assessment quickly shows which options are realistic and economically viable.
